Paul was writing in a tradition where spirit, ghost, and breath were the same word. In Greek, 'spirit' is most commonly translated πνεύμα (pneuma), which you might recognize from some other interesting words.

'When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.'
