PAKI, why is it that you think modern equals good?

The only seasons we have here are in window displays, actually they are here however subtle, but not enough for the birds to notice. Mr Gray's an idiot. Chat directions: Click on chat then write something. To log off click the X.

I don't think crows migrate in England. They just always seem to be there. Cawing. Croaking. Crapping. Horrible.

It's not just the preserve of mdern poets either - read Wodsworth's Prelude and tell me that's not a novel. Fantastic poetry, of course.

PAKI, I never said that Byron was the greatest poet ever. What I meant to imply was that Byron had talent as a writer. You may prefer modern art to that produced in the Renaissance, but Michelangelo was still skilled beyond comparison with any painter today. And likewise, though you may prefer some poetry on this sire to that of Byron's, he was clearly a more talented writer.

You know, both you and DA are the only ones on this site that refer to me as PAKI, all caps, etc...hmmm. Anyway, on to the comment. I try to avoid this type of argument because it always falls back to the Shakespeare question. Was he the greatest writer or simply the greatest thief? Byron was quality (although many would disagree he is even the best of his generation) and maybe better than anyone on this site and maybe better than anyone writing today, but the style, the content, the fact that modernism was still a zygote, well I find it too tough to compare. Same thing with Mikey and the modern painters. Plus, it depends what you are looking for. The difference is a canyon. So I will not judge works on this site against a bygone period. I will judge them in the context they are being written, and if you do that you will find some "good" and maybe even "excellent" work on this site, although it does take a bit of serious mining for any consistency to this fact.

Oh ok then quickly can you recommend a book. I realize he's the widow of Plath and other's found out last night he was poet laureate in England. Read something called lineage.

What is it with you people and prosaic poems? Do you not read anything contemporary? And gee, let's give this a 5 because it shoots right over the head and is dense. Babbit why don't you write something lighter for timmy boy to understand. And make it rhyme.

My point was nothing to do with the spelling of "saviour". My point was that you did NOT capitalise the 'h' in "he". As any true follower of Jesu knows, it is blasphemy to refer to the almighty as 'he' rather than 'He'.

birthday letters (the newest) is a good overview. plus he finally comes clean (in a way) on the plath struggles.
Christof on some deleted poem 5 Sep 2002, 10:19 AM
His 'Birthday Letters' - psothumously to Plath - are fantastic, as are his early collections - Lupercal, Crow especially. Avoid his Laureate poetry (collected Raincharm for the Duchy) - awful stuff. A big new biography has been published by Faber over here - very good. The man was a bleak and leathery genius.
