2) Consider the alternative: You have almost no experience with blacks, have no education in appropriate ways of talking about blacks, and have pretty much nothing else except a room-filling self-righteousness. If you were trying to be a car-mechanic instead of a poet, you'd be adding cats to the gas tank and using week-old luncheon meat for steering-adjuster. Then, when an actual mechanic tried to tell you that car was never going to run on cats, you'd trump in his face and leap headfirst into a wall. And I don't just "say" I'm more educated than you are [in terms of talking about African-Americans]. I AM more educated than you are [in terms of talking about African-Americans]. That's not in dispute. But no, I'd like to think you'd at least give my comments a chance because they made sense, mainly, and because I had more experience than you in the subject, secondly. 6) Um, yeah. That's why it's called a suggestion. Is what you want this poem to be about essentially, "I, Dovina, am colossally ignorant of anything about blacks at best, and a racist at worst"? 4 [Reprise]) If I told you "Dovina, go ahead, post 25 comments on poemranker today", what would you think?

"Lick my ass" is the fiercest and most commonly used Arabic cussword. The next fiercest/most-common is, "God willing, you'll shit oil."

I do. Oh. Another story about my wife: Not that she spends a lot of time thinking about reincarnation, but a few years ago she got a gift-certificate to a professional Past-Life Regressionist and got hypnotized in order to revisit a past life. She says she had a really intense vision about living in a hut somewhere. The thing she remembers most clearly? That she was wearing an interesting kind of sandals.

Here are the assumptions you've made about poemranker users in the last week. And not that it matters, but I've also included how they're all incorrect. 1) zodiac doesn't use constructive criticism "without trying to make sense." -- I always use constructive criticism WHILE trying to make sense. 2) Goad is " bamboon... big headed egotistic being". -- Goad's not a bamboon, egotistic, or a real being. 3) You touched zodiac's "nerve". -- No you didn't. 4) zodiac sits around a computer all day. -- No, actually you're on poemranker a lot more often than I am. And I sit around a desert all day, not a computer. 5) zodiac is old. -- I'm not much older than you. 6) zodiac's egotistic. -- No, I was just trying to tell you to use their, instead of there. I'm not egotistic about pants, either, but if you went outside without yours, I'd try to let you know. 7) rockmage is a "little boy" and looks like a "d*ckhead". -- rockmage is about a hundred years old and looks like a v*gina. 8) rockmage "came here to offend." -- rockmage is consistently the nicest poemranker user. You're the offensive one and only came here to get your knob polished by juvenile kissasses. 9) Stephen Robbins is on your side. -- Stephen wishes you would fall in a well. 10) zodiac has "the intention to save the world." -- Actually, I'd like to see the world fall in a well. 11) ho_hum made about 8 assumptions. -- No he didn't. 12) ho_hum is still making assumptions even if he doesn't express them. -- No he's not. So shut the fuck up.

Are you currently filthy rich? I was talking about something you actually have, or have done.

It is incorrect to say that all your critics are old and only critical because of this. Many of your critics can write like this but have chosen not to because they believe the style is not particularly valuable. Most decent poets can rhyme well and most decent poets will throw away many perfectly good rhymes because they have set their poem a structure to fulfil. This is called discipline. Now jam poetry or rap poetry or whatever you wish to call this traditionally has less discipline. If this style is to be good you must use some. Now if you were to write a poem about the criticism of goad then certain things would not naturally come up, castration for instance. The good poet would therefore look for a more suitable word. There is no use of metaphor in this poem. Now there is no law to say you need to use metaphor, but metaphor at least conveys reflection of an idea and an attempt to represent that idea in an interesting way. I would take issue with your point about Shakespeare. Although Shakespeare did to a certain extent break the rules, what he did not do was make the same mistakes that every other uneducated hack poet made in his day. Bad poets have forever made the same mistakes such as vagueness, forced rhyme and incoherence. If you make these mistakes they are not suddenly going to become revolutionary just because they are not found in published poetry. The question of punctuation and grammar is important. There is an argument that a bad critic will focus on poor grammar and use that to make conclusions about the poet and poetry as a whole. This is analgous to a poet using the metaphor of a rose to infer that all pretty things have thorns. It is unwarranted. However poor grammar and punctuation can contribute to the poet being unable to get his message across. To attack grammar for grammar's sake therefore is entirely valid. There is no advantage to a poet writing poor grammar and therefore any rectification of it is a good thing.

Me childish, I am simply doing the honest thing and replying to peoples comment. I am also having a bit of fun and not just being boring. As for the assumptions, You are still making them even if you dont express them. Now stop arguing And being "Childish".

This is intense Ella. I think I can relate to this...sometimes...someone just fills you so deeply, that, that,... you find it hard to imagine -- can I really be the one you're looking for? -- But you really are if life puts two people together like that and it feels so incredible, with me I say just go with it.

WOW, thank you sonawrote -- or should I call you Ella?, your support feels great and makes it all worthwhile that someone appreciates what I'm trying to get to even when it does'nt all come out perfect & write yet. Especially someone who's a chick, haha (sorry, I mean woman). So I don't impress a pack of old men, that's ok with me, lol. F*ck them anyway, THEY MEAN NOTHING TO ME!!!! I can tell from your poems that u had a lot of experience being misunderstood also and hey I respect that. Wow, coming to New Yourk, that thot spins my head right around. Just walking into something like that, finding the rght people woh can see what im about...my dream...u r taking my breath away right there. Anyway my normal way is to freestyle right onto paper what I'm thinking but this time I took more time to consider evry word. What do you think is this the right path if I truly want to shoot for that Def poetry Jam? or should I keep more with the spontaneous freessstyle?
Re: f*ckyouoldmenandyourrules by Damien_ middenHeap 80.132.253.209 19-Apr-05/3:48 PM
I'm going to give you an 8 for this. Not because it's actually worth an 8, mind you, but just because the fact that you obviously must have put actual time and effort into coming up with 5 5-syllable rhymes & a 4-syllable rhyme against inferiority/superiority is (I hope) an encouraging sign of some sort of pending revivification. Though with our luck, it's more likely a sign of pending revitrification. speaking of "xxxxx-ation": rhyming against -ation 8 times in a row is DEFINITELY NOT to be encouraged. Please don't do that again. Even if the last one is a clever use of an obscure word. And please: get rid of "fascicles". It's a word that just ought not to exist. Even though you've used it correctly (in an awkward, contrived sort of way) the fact that no one ever in the history of poetry would ever consider using it that way makes it just seem wrong, and makes YOU seem just wrong.

What about cleaning out my closet? Setting aside the vitriol, just the sheer technical excellence of the language is exhilarating.

It is so pleasing that in this climate of hypersensitivity the catholic church can overlook Cardinal Roland Ratzinger's rather unpleasant nazi connections and install such a fine candidate.
