You may well laugh. I, however, do not find the preceding exchange funny at all. It's a sign of a sick sad time when a hard-working jerky-eating American finds himself mocked simply because he is not a Cack-Weatherby, 76th Earl of Westmoreland, or some such. Well I may not be titled aristocracy, Sir -=Dark_Angel=-, but I am its American equivalent, being heir to the enormous Milwaukie Brownstein Meat-Processing fortune, and in addition possessor of a four-year business degree from a reputable American university (which, unlike yourself, I have paid for.) I spend summers in various fashionable European vacation spots which I refer to in close company as 'foraging for culture' and which I secretly find boring and unhealthful to my digestive system. What's more, Mr. Lord -=Dark_Angel=-, I live in a sprawling modern ranch house with every imaginable appliance at my fingertips - while you, sir, rattling around in your crumbling ancestral manor, are barely able to afford the most basic contrivances in plumbing.

This is a textbook of overused rhymes - places/faces, night/fight, hours/flowers, eyes/lies, walking/talking, crying/lying, pain/insane, and so on. That's not your fault though, and it'll take care of itself as you read more poetry. Sewing your friends back onto you was a really great imgae and caught me off-guard. I don't know if that's a common phrase, but I've never heard it before. If it's an original, then bravo.

Properly read, the divisions go Fo otha 'n gin gou to fass, which is a dialectal rendering of 'For other than gin [you've] got to fast,' a famous (though meaningless) Southern proverb.

I have thus far refrained from noting that your pen-name (minus dashes, equal-signs, and underscore) is the title of a bad action television series directed by James Cameron. I have no desire to use such a weapon - which, incidentally, is banned under the provisions of the famous Transatlantic Treaty Against Improper & Sardonic References to Our Respective Cultures signed by our two countries in 1976, a treaty already strained to the point of breaking by our endless caricatures of your country's systems of dental hygiene and education, and by the constant portrayal of Americans as gung-ho, jerky-eating illiterates on your hilarious and unavoidable BBC sitcoms. I implore you, then, to point your tanks in some other direction (France, perhaps,) lest I should say something we both regret. Thank you.

All I'm saying is that people are going to think that. EVERYONE is. EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THE WHOLE PLANET is going to think of the movie. Whatever you meant, that will be the result. Think of it this way: say I wrote a poem entitled "I'm a Racist Pedophile". Even if the poem itself wasn't about me being a racist pedophile, people would probably think that about me, and I'd be more than a little responsible for that. More accurately for your situation, say I wrote a poem called "I Live in The Matrix" - now what are the odds that I invented a metaphor for the empowered institution I'm required to subscribe to by the fact of my living on earth, and just happened to call that institution 'The Matrix' without having given any regard to the popular trilogy starring Keanu Reeves? They're pretty long; people are going to think I'm referring to the movie, which would be crap. Change it. CHANGE IT CHANGE IT CHANGE IT. And it's not like I'm criticizing an image you spent hours inventing yourself (or, incidentally, one which has anything really to do with the imagery of your poem,) so why defend it? Just think of almost any other adjective than vanilla and attach it to almost any other adjective than sky and you'll be alright.

'to be' in 'once more to be buried' bothers me. I've been looking in Poet's Market at poetry reviews which specialize in minimalism, which I think is where you're headed. You might take a look at 'Indefinite Space' (wings.buffalo.edu/epc/ezines/treehome/tree05/indef_22.html) and 'Raw Dog Press/Post Poems,' (www.freeyellow.com/members/rawdog) among others. See if you can get published.

Vanilla Sky is the absolute worst movie ever. I have seen films that were trying to be bad which aren't as bad. Referencing that movie in a pretentious wannabe serious poem is, I'm afraid, equivalent to enfolding a moldy piece of stale jerky in a fresh steaming turd.
